what kind of role the designer will play in the society of control?

24The Society of Control text discusses different types of social format that people have experienced, as well as the evolution of every stage. In the process, there is a similar feature among these formats, that, most of rules and laws determined by the powerful government or industry. From the first stage to the current stage, the structure of the society has changed a lot, which consists of the isolated enclosures, and each of these enclosures has its own rules or laws.

In the past few decades, due to the development of the technology and the frequently exchange of the information, people have more freedom to make a decision by themselves  even the main power was still holed by the powerful minorities. This means that because of the fast transmission of information, the social atmosphere becomes more and more transparent, therefore bringing relative impartial social rules. 

Finally, designers as an important group of the society, not only should grasp the opportunity to finish some cross-border corporation, but also should create some reflective artworks for the public to raise their awareness. According to Dunne and Raby, speculative design plays an important role in our lives especially related to the future. Even the future is unpredictable, designers should try to develop some design fictions that based on the existing state, which brings public a better understanding of present and help them to connect imagination with reality.


Postscript on the Societies of Control – Reflective words

This article provides the analysis of the differences between societies of sovereignty, disciplinary societies and a society of control, and also discussed different types of social format that people have experienced.

From Gilles Deleuze’s perspective, families, schools and barracks could be treated as cages rather than a freedom land, due to the fact that each one has their own specific discipline that have to be followed. In this situation, human would become restricted and formalistic. This means that human’s world would be more similar to robot’s world.

Because of the technological evolution, corporation among different areas become more and more frequent, market economy has become the soul of the corporation instead of  capitalism, influencing on individuals’ life or the entire economic circle, people are no longer enclosed but in debt.

As a designer, we should always have awareness of considering mixed environments and their own rules. However,What kind of role does interaction design would play in the future world? Does the controlled society would come true with the help of interaction design? Due to the popularity of Internet, much information especially the private information is more easier to track, I believe the privacy must be a issue and a controversy we will meet in the later future.

Reflection on The Construction of Publics

Carl DiSalvo suggested that although the Public and its Problems is nearly a century old, it is still relevant and productive today, particularly in the context of design studies.  It links with contemporary world conditions through its pluralistic stance, endorsing a public that is broad, inclusive, and multiple. It is productive because it provides numerous points of intersection with both design theory and professional design activity that suggest novel courses for thinking about and doing design.

Due to the fact that public’s undeniable nature lies in its indirection, extension,endurance and serious consequences of conjoint and interacting behavior, design therefore is entitled to influence the public by its consequences.

The writer discussed the question of how a public is constituted, there is no doubt that the architecture is the most important thing of the public construction because of its huge and complicated system, as well as  its obvious public nature.

Another important point is that how the processes and products of design might serve in discovering and articulating the issues that spur a public into being.It requires designers to seek for some points of intersection with both design theory and professional design activity. This is because the action is the central concept of the design objective and these actions are influenced by the social and political reasons, from the theory and practice aspects.

Reflective words on Beyond Radical Design in Speculative Everything: Design, Fiction, and Social Dreaming


In this chapter, the writers started with the word “dream”, which does not necessarily  mean the fantasy or future. The real meaning of dream in this context is our desire to imagine the unpredictable future, which had inspired us a lot and encouraged us to use design as a tool to create ideas and values.

Many people define design as problem solving, but we face tremendous challenges more serious than they appear to be. There is no doubt that there is a tight connection between us and outside world, this requires our ideas, attitudes, behaviors to be based on the reality. Although these challenges are huge, speculative design is a possible way for us to explore the future rather than giving up. This is because the speculative design reduces the gap between the reality and our vision by inspiring  and encouraging designers to imagine and explore the future.

A fascinating diagram was given by Dunne & Raby, illustrating different kinds of potential futures, which consists of four cones, the probable, the plausible, the possible and the preferable. The probable future describes what is likely to happen without influenced by some extreme upheaval, this one is closer to the future because the prediction is rational, and this is why many design methods and education are heading towards this field. The second one is the plausible future, this area is about scenario planning and foresight, exploring alternative economic and political futures. Next, the skill in possible future makes a link between today’s world and the suggested one, but when designer do the speculative design for the future, they need to embrace the believable points which makes the design acceptable. The last one is the preferable future, intersecting the probable and plausible. Although it is determined by the powerful minority such as the government, I still hold an optimistic attitude, the public will be more active to participate in the decision of the future.

From the analysis of the historical evolutionism of design, the writers believe that we should absorb helpful insights from the past design methods, as well as engaging new methods appropriate for nowadays society. I strongly agree with this opinion, we need to hold an optimistic attitude, due to the fact that the situation of social media are advantageous, it is possible for designers to work across different fields and cooperate with different kinds of industries and professional people.  As a result, it provides more possibilities for us to explore the future although the future is unpredictable.

Coding Research

Once I have completed the physical model, I started to focus on the technique part, that is LED connection and Arduino control. The operating principle is when the user put the Goblet up, the LED lights will be turned on by using the light sensor which is controlled by Arduino, the lights will map a wireframe goblet which is quite different from the original wood model and therefore achieve the user’s expectation.

In fact, I didn’t  know much about the Arduino and just try to find more possibilities for our coding. After searching through the related website, I found the similar  code to control the light sensor as a switch. I download this reference and asked our classmate Yoogle, who is good at coding and he gave me some advice.



After these guidance, I completed the code of the modeling and then transferred these data into the Arduino. In this part, light sensor works as a switch to receive the task instruction from the Arduino and then control the LED lights. This solution brings users the visual effect and satisfies their unpredictable expectation.

In addition, I used another material called the black ABS to produce a 3D Goblet for testing by using 3D print machine. This solution is a fast and efficient way to make a model, but the limitation is that the machine cannot print big size for display.



Card Paper Model

Finally, I went back to the original method to make a prototype, which uses the card paper. Firstly, I completed the plan of the 3D model by using Adobe Illustrator, making sure all the details are correct. Then printed the image and separated them from the paper by using the angle protractor and knife, connecting every part by using glue. Due to the translucent feature of the card paper, I do not need to drill holes on it for LED lights. It is easier to use to produce the prototype throughout testing various material and doing so much research. As a result, sometimes the original or basic material brings us surprise.

Prototype Stage I

In the prototype, I started to consider the form of the model, like the choice of materials. At the start, I had no idea about the materials and I tried to find some solutions by trying different kinds of materials. Then three wireframe cubes were made by using different kinds of metal wires in order to choose the materials, along with LED lights for the original prototype, but I failed two times due to the fact that the metal is way too soft.

The Process of Sketch Draft

Also, I got the original data of the Goblet from James Blinn. After doing research on the website, I figured out the data stands for every single position in CAD software, in other words, the original proportion of the Goblet. Then I produced some sketch draft of the appearance of the Goblet, these promises the accuracy of the Goblet when we made it later.


Basing on the original proportion and the draft, I started designing the Electronic version of Goblet by using Rhino. As a result, these work were prepared for the modeling of the physical one.

The relationship among audience, artifact and narrative space

when the object is put in the narrative space of museum, what kind of relationship or interaction will be expected for viewers?

In Cecillie Gravesen’s and Usman Haque‘s lectures, they all pointed out that audience plays an important role in creating an artifact or object. In participatory design, participants (putative, potential or future) are invited to cooperate with designers, researchers and developers during an innovation process. Potentially, they participate during several stages of an innovation process: they participate during the initial exploration and problem definition both to help define the problem and to focus ideas for solution, and during development, they help evaluate proposed solutions.

I read through this reference about “participatory design” and was inspired by Cecillie Gravesen and Usman Haque, I obtained some key points related to the the participation, which is viewer’s role had changed a lot in the past few decades, they want to be a part of the artwork instead of just a viewer.

Usman Haque        “MARLING” & “ANOTHER LIFE”

Inspired from Usman Haque’s artworks, I decided that some visual effects as reflections are necessary for users’ when they do an action on the artifacts, embracing their emotion and satisfying their unpredictable expectation. As a result, tangible feature and interacting feedback are essential for the redesigned artifact.

V&A Visit & Artifact


Our tour of V&A Blythe House, for visiting and researching.

At first, the Archive’s staff showed us a lot of artifacts of computer art in the Archive of Art and Design of the V&A Museum, and also they told us some stories of the artifacts, just like when and how they collected them into the Museum.



554742819After the general instruction, all of us started going through these artifacts, asking some questions, discussing with our tutors. I was really interested in several pieces of them, especially the “Manipulating Data” one,while my parter Nidhi was interested in the some space technological ones, just like the “Space View” and the “Goblet” which were designed by James Blinn.



Finally, Nidhi and me chose the “Goblet” not only because it is an computer artwork which is famous for Jet Propulsion Laboratory , but also we think it is so interesting and we wanted to know much more about it.


About the “Goblet”:

It was designed by James Blinn in 1977, illustrating the lack of realism inherent in a line-drawing of a goblet. The shape of the goblet is apparent, but there is confusion as to what constitutes the front and the back of the object.

It is general  believed that when people first glance saw some objects, they just stay on the surface level instead of having a consciousness of its reality, such as the structure, its story  or culture background.
